What Are The Signs Of Dental Implant Failure?

The most frequently asked question we hear from patients is: “How do we know when an implant fails?”

The following are the few symptoms that can be observed :

  • Difficulty in chewing.
  • Movement in the replaced crown or bridge, on Implants.
  • Redness or inflammation in the concerned area.
  • Pain may or may not be there but discomfort due to the above mentioned reasons.

If you suspect implant failure, we always recommend you to visit your dentist. The good news is that failure of dental implants is very unlikely as It is one of the most successful and predictable operations in dentistry today.

But  with proper treatment and care Implant failures can be avoided.Dental implant surgery is a very complicated process. It requires a high level of skill and extensive experience especially when it comes to the full mouth replacement performed by a doctor. If dental implants fail, specialised training is needed to handle these cases and determine the best treatment options.

However, it’s good to know some of the common causes  that will lead to implant failure.

Let us see!

What Causes Implant Failure?

Dental implants work like natural teeth and routine care like brushing, flossing and a periodic cleaning by a dental professional will help one avoid any failures associated with them. Although rare, the causes of dental implant failure are:

  • Not attaining primary stability during implant placement.
  • Certain amount of torque is required for an implant to survive and if that is not attained maybe due to poor bone quality or wrong selection of the site or the implant size, the implant is bound to fail, expertise and experience of the performing doctor plays a very important  role. Look out for doctors credentials and his experience in the field before approaching one as it is a one time procedure and if executed properly it will serve you for your lifetime.
  • Overloading of the implant, if the required number of implants are not placed, (maybe to cut down the cost)there will be increased load on implants leading to their failure.
  • Traumatic bite is also one of the main reasons, which means that if the teeth are not aligned properly with the teeth in the opposing arch, it will increase the load on the implant, leading to its failure.
  •  Not placing the implant properly, that is if you consider Basal implants, they should engage the bone cortex, if not,it will not get proper anchorage and fail over a period of time.
  • Placing of cantilevers also might lead to failure,Tubero Pterygoid implants in the upper arch and Nerve bypass in the lower arch if there is no sufficient  bone in the molar area is mandatory for a full mouth prosthesis to survive.
  • Poor oral hygiene will also lead to implant failure.

Other reasons being :

  • Autoimmune Diseases
  • Medications like IV Bisphosphonates
  • Trauma to the surgical site
  • Head and neck radiation after Implantation.
  • Smoking, which is contraindicated in conventional Two piece implants, but it does not affect Basal implants.
  • Diabetes can also lead to Two piece implant failure as these implants engage the alveolar bone unlike the Basal implants which take support of the Basal bone which is highly mineralised and is devoid of infection.
  • Peri-implantitis in conventional Two piece implants can also be destructive.

Before undergoing a dental implant, discuss with your dentist the risk factors that can limit the success of your implant.Good oral hygiene is also key to avoid implant problems. Brushing and rinsing twice a day with an antibacterial mouthwash can help keep gums healthy.
